Singing bowls (also known as Himalayan bowls, rin gongs, medicine bowls, Tibetan bowls or suzu gongs in Japan) are a type of bell, specifically classified as a standing bell. Rather than hanging inverted or attached to a handle, standing bells sit with the bottom surface resting. The sides and rim of singing bowls vibrate to produce sound.
Singing bowls were traditionally used throughout Asia as part of Bon and Tantric Buddhist sadhana. Today they are employed worldwide both within and without these spiritual traditions, for meditation, trance-induction, relaxation, healthcare, personal well-being and religious practice.
Methods of Playing Your Singing Bowl
Singing:-
Bowls can be played by the friction of rubbing a wood, plastic or leather wrapped stick around the rim of the bowl to emphasize the harmonic overtones and create a continuous 'singing' sound. The best sound will come from a modernly manufactured bowl as they have the smoothest finish which generates the clearest sound.
To produce the singing sound, place on a flat surface with nothing touching the sides of the bowl. Slide a stick around the rim, maintaining contact at all times in a firm but slow movement. If you cannot get the sound started, you can give the rim a small strike but make sure to follow straight away in the circular movement so that the sound and vibration is not lost. This should be one continuous movement.
Vibration:-
The traditional style bowls are best used for vibration purposes - the larger the bowl, the stronger the vibration. Bowls can be placed on the stomach, back, neck, legs, arms, head and be stood in to heal the feet and lower legs. The best way to get a great vibration from your bowl is to strike it once with a padded mallet, rather than using the round stick method used for singing.
Hydrodynamic:-
By adding an adequate amount of water to your bowl, it can be used as water therapy. This can only be achieved with a traditional bowl as the vibrations cause the water to leap up into the air. During traditional prayer, if the flecks of water land on you it is said to cause good luck.
Please Note: Although this is the singing bowl you will receive, the colour of the cushion may vary.
